This Week in the Reformed Journal: Jake, Jennifer, James and more . . .
By Jeff Munroe, Editor • Issue #79 • View online
There is a lot of charm in Dave Larsen’s short story “Jake’s Engagement,” about the risks and rewards of a late-in-life romance. As editor of the RJ, I try to mix things up once in a while, because, as a sage friend reminds me, not every piece needs to be somber. I hope you appreciate the goodness and grace in Dave’s story. Do yourself a favor and start your Labor Day Weekend with a smile.

Jake’s Engagement
If you don’t know her personally, I bet just from reading her blog entries you know Jennifer Holberg is a life-force. We featured Jennifer twice this week, on the blog with a post marking her 50th year in the classroom as a student and educator, and as the subject of a podcast conversation with Steve Mathonnet-VanderWell. Jennifer’s infectious energy and cheer comes through, and she had an interesting and unusual childhood, which she explores with Steve. Take a look and a listen.
A Golden Jubilee
I do hope you also are tuning in regularly to our poetry podcast. This week’s episode with David James and his poem “How the Fog Can Matter” opens doors to new levels of insight and understanding. David also shared another poem with us, “Down the Stretch,” especially appropriate to this time of year, as summer fades and the autumn approaches.
How the Fog Can Matter
Down the Stretch,
We featured an excerpt from Doug Brouwer’s memoir Chasing After Wind: A Pastor’s Life a few months ago, and also featured a podcast conversation between Doug, his daughter Sarah, and Kate Kooyman about the life of a pastor. Now we’ve got a full-blown review of the book, but April Fiet, a Presbyterian pastor in Nebraska. As April points out, Doug’s book is remarkable for its unblinking look into the life of a pastor.

As always, there is more at the home page.
Blessed Reading,
